J. J. McAvoy
J. J. McAvoy first started working on Ruthless People during a Morality and Ethics lecture her freshman year of college. X number of years later, she is an insomniac who has changed her major three times, and is a master in the art of procrastination. If you ask her why she began writing, she will simply tell you “They wanted to get their story out.”
She is currently working on her next novel . . . so please bug her on Twitter @JJMcAvoy
When I started this book, I worried that one of the dumpees was going to be overly melancholy or depressed. So I was pleasantly surprised when the author gave me two characters who seriously kicked ass. Eli and Gwen both handled an awful situation with such grace and humor. It endeared them to me.
There are very few people who understand the pain of being left at the alter or in the crowd while the bride runs off with your fiancé. It’s not exactly a bond your hope to share with anyone and it’s probably why initially Eli and Gwen don’t try to be anything to one another. But they end up eventually becoming friends and it is awesome. Because Eli and Gwen pestering and annoying each other was freaking entertaining.
So when their friendship developed into even more, I was Julia Roberts a la Pretty Women whooping it up for them. I was psyched. I loved everything about this couple – their banter and flirting, the dates, their chemistry – it’s all swoon-worthy and panty melting awesomeness. Eli pulled out all the stops in his courting of Guinevere and it was truly something to behold. And in return Gwen gives him everything he never knew he wanted.
It is not all smooth sailing for the couple and they endure one crazy hiccup that I wasn’t expecting. Honestly, I was not really sure the drama was necessary, but it didn’t take away from my enjoyment of the book. However, I do think the turmoil that the author hoped it would put into the book should have either been explored more or just simply left out. It’s my only criticism of the book.
Overall, I think The Thing Between Eli and Gwen is a must read romance. I cannot express how much I enjoyed reading this book. It just made me happy. J.J. McAvoy took an absolutely horrible and embarrassing situation and she created an incredible love story from it. She is an absolute writing rock star and she wrote an amazing book.
