Oxford Series (Book 1)
Release Date: October 6, 2015
Meet the men of Oxford magazine! In the first captivating spin-off of Lauren Layne’s Sex, Love & Stiletto series, a not-so-friendly battle of the sexes turns into a scorching office romance.
Hotshot sports editor Cole Sharpe has been freelancing for Oxford for years, so when he hears about a staff position opening up, he figures he’s got the inside track. Then his boss drops a bombshell: Cole has competition. Female competition, in the form of a fresh-faced tomboy who can hang with the dudes—and write circles around them, too. Cole usually likes his women flirty and curvy, but he takes a special interest in his skinny, sassy rival, if only to keep an eye on her. And soon, he can’t take his eyes off her.
Penelope Pope knows all too well that she comes off as just one of the guys. Since she’s learned that wanting more usually leads to disappointment, Penelope’s resigned to sitting on the sidelines when it comes to love. So why does Cole make her want to get back in the game? The man is as arrogant as he is handsome. He probably sees her as nothing more than a barrier to his dream job. But when an unexpected kiss turns into a night of irresistible passion, Penelope has to figure out whether they’re just fooling around—or starting something real.
Prior to becoming an author, Lauren worked in e-commerce and web-marketing. In 2011, she and her husband moved from Seattle to New York City, where Lauren decided to pursue a full-time writing career. It took six months to get her first book deal (despite ardent assurances to her husband that it would only take three). Since then, Lauren’s gone on to publish ten books, including the bestselling Stiletto series, with several more on the way in 2015.
Lauren currently lives in Chicago with her husband and spoiled Pomeranian. When not writing, you’ll find her at happy hour, running at a doggedly slow pace, or trying to straighten her naturally curly hair.
I am a competitive person by nature, so I really enjoy books where the main couple’s unfolding romance initiates from a competition. If it is written well, this type of storyline can be incredible. The character’s ensuing battle to further their own personal ambitions versus what their heart desires can be the foundation to hijinks, work place hilarity and some serious sexual tension – thus giving a reader a impressive book to enjoy. So Irresistibly Yours’ blurb called to me like a siren’s song and I could not wait to read it.
As someone who has not read any of the Stilettos books, (an error I plan to correct asap) I had no clue the greatness that was waiting for me inside the pages of Irresistibly Yours. It was seriously amazing – I was completely enraptured by everything in this book. The friendships. The romance. The quick wit and banter. The plot. I devoured Cole and Penelope’s book in one afternoon because I just didn’t want to stop reading their story.
Cole and Penelope’s relationship was lust at first sight but initially they stay just friends because of their delicate work situation. Their personalities play off one another well and it created a fun dynamic. But that connection was nothing compared the intensity of their feelings once they gave into the attraction they feel for one another. That was truly spectacular.
I think this author consistently creates characters that make you feel engaged with while you are reading their developing story – you want to be apart of their world. This group was seriously hilarious and entertaining. After a few chapters, I wished I could just show up at the Oxford office so I could take the guys out for a beer (so I could flirt and drool). Or be friends with their wives so I could get invited to their dinner parties and gossip. (Their scheming and match making was the best!!) The scenes when they’re just being friends, mocking and bantering with one another made laugh out loud.
Irresistibly Yours is an awesome book and Lauren Layne is the master of writing fabulous romances. Her characters gave me all of these great moments that made me happy plus a delectable love story that left me swooning. I just loved it all. I definitely suggest meeting Cole and Penelope as well as all of their friends – they are remarkable group of characters and have a can’t miss romance.
This book is a top recommendation from me and it already has me anticipating future books in the Oxford series.
