First love. Second chance?
As the daughter of a hoarder, Phoenix Fuller had a tough childhood. So when the handsome, popular Riley Stinson became her boyfriend in high school, she finally felt as though she had something to be proud of. Phoenix was desperate not to lose him—especially once she found out she was pregnant. Yes, she might have acted a bit obsessive when he broke up with her. But she did not run down the girl he started dating next.
Unfortunately, there was no way to prove her innocence. Now, after serving her time in prison, Phoenix has been released. All she wants to do is return to Whiskey Creek and get to know her son. But Jacob’s father isn’t exactly welcoming.
Riley doesn’t trust Phoenix, doesn’t want her in Jacob’s life. He is, however, ready to find someone to love. And he wants a good mother for his son. He has no idea that he’s about to find both!
It was a shocking experience that jump-started Brenda Novak’s career as a bestselling author–she caught her day-care provider drugging her children with cough syrup to get them to sleep all day. That was when Brenda decided she needed to quit her job as a loan officer and help make a living from home.
“When I first got the idea to become a novelist, it took me five years to teach myself the craft and finish my first book,” Brenda says. But she sold that book, and the rest is history. Her novels have made the New York Times and USA Today bestseller lists and won many awards, including four Rita nominations, the Book Buyer’s Best, the Book Seller’s Best and the National Reader’s Choice Award.
Brenda and her husband, Ted, live in Sacramento and are proud parents of five children–three girls and two boys. When she’s not spending time with her family or writing, Brenda is usually raising funds for diabetes research (her youngest son has this disease). So far, Brenda has raised $2.4 million. Anything Brenda Novak publishes is an automatic one click purchase for me – I love her writing style. There’s nothing like snuggling up with one of her books – they are always filled with the best characters and her stories are so rich and colorful in detail you can easily imagine them as you read.
I devoured This Heart of Mine. Riley and Phoenix’s adult lives started with a dramatic twist of fate that altered their life paths in ways they never could have imagined. Neither one was truly prepared for what was to become their new realities. Their lives could have been depressing and dark but instead they both made something of themselves. Their tale was incredibly warm and their story was felt genuine.
Phoenix Fuller was the parent returning home after spending practically a lifetime in jail. She was the one who had to overcome her past and get to know her son that she had barely knew. Her character was incredible – she was resilient and tough. Honestly, I was a bit in awe of her. Phoenix’s courage to become more after being jailed for a crime she did not commit at a young age was admirable.
Riley Stinson is one of the town’s must eligible bachelor’s and every women’s fantasy come true. However, what truly made him stand out though was his parenting skills – he’s an awesome dad. He’s hard-working, intelligent, sexy and quite appealing. But Riley isn’t perfect – he made his own mistakes and choices he needed to overcome but his character understood when he needed to re-evaluate his life.
Riley and Phoenix’s journey wasn’t a typical romance story in my mind. I thought what made the story special was that both of the characters were trying to redeem themselves in the other person’s eyes. They were both trying to do more and to be better than what was expected of them. It kept you completely enticed with the story because you wanted them to find their happily ever after.
This couple made my heart swoon. I loved This Heart of Mine. Absolutely loved it. If you haven’t traveled to Whiskey Creek, you should go now. This is a can’t miss series.
